Stuck in Sensorimotor?

Numbers 1

Lots of people (including me!) have joked about the fatuousness of Trump’s seeming to adopt the “lobotomized ostrich principle.” You know, if I can’t see it, it doesn’t exist. Or, to dress it in more sophisticated garb, Stage 1 of Jean Piaget’s theory of child development, Sensorimotor:

“The main achievement during this stage is ‘object permanence’ – knowing that an object still exists, even if it’s hidden.” (Wiki) Anyone who’s ever played “peek-a-boo” with an infant has experienced this at first hand. This stage is usually surpassed by age 2.

Granted, Donald Trump is intellectually challenged and reading-disabled. But he’s a hell of a lot more capable than a 2-year-old! Honestly, to suggest his comments and policy reflect stupidity is (pace “A Fish Called Wanda”) an insult to stupid people.

Clearly Trump is a psychopath. No, I’m not a psychologist or psychiatrist. But even I can get a clue from something like Hare’s checklist of psychopathic behavior, and I trust the judgment of those like Dr. Bandy Lee who really are professionals.

I’m not a philosopher, theologian, nor even a theist, either; and I’m uncomfortable about speaking of moral absolutes. However, I’ll venture to say that, if “evil” is a thing, then Trump embodies it. Period.
